Pool Care FAQ: Quick Answers

Quick answers to the questions we hear most from pool owners.

How long should I run my pool pump?

Long enough to turn the water over at least once a day: usually 8–12 hours in summer and 4–6 hours in winter.

How soon can I swim after adding chemicals?

About 20–30 minutes after adding pH or alkalinity adjusters. After shocking, wait until chlorine is under 5 ppm (often overnight).

Why does my pool smell like chlorine?

That smell is chloramines, which is used-up chlorine. The fix is more chlorine (shock), not less.

Is a salt pool chemical-free?

No. A salt system makes chlorine for you, but you still need to balance pH, alkalinity, calcium and stabilizer.

How often should I drain my pool?

In Arizona, roughly every 2–3 years, based on your TDS and stabilizer readings, and only in cooler months.

How much water loss is normal?

Up to about 1/4 inch a day in summer. More than that may mean a leak; try the bucket test or call us.

Can I add chemicals all at once?

No. Add one at a time, with the pump running, and wait a few hours between products.

Do I need to shock a salt pool?

Yes, occasionally: after heavy use or storms, or by using the salt cell’s “boost” mode.
